Popped a bottle of 2020 K Vintners King Coal this week and thought I'd share my thoughts. This is one of the premium bottlings of K Vintners and is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Syrah. While this blend is unusual in the US it is common in Australia and is borrowed in the New World from the Old World practice of Bordeaux 'hermitage-ing' their Cabernet Sauvignons with Syrah from Hermitage. Chateau Palmer still makes one of these bottlings occasionally. However, this has largely fallen out of favor in France.
This was a beautiful wine that had aromas of black fruit, sauvage, and graphite. On the palate the black fruit was in the background and it had savory meaty/iron flavors, a streak of graphite, and a minerality up front. Texturally it was layered and beautifully silky with a hit of freshness at the end that helped round out it's medium to full weight. Just an expertly crafted wine and is worth the super high scores it received. I gave it 96 points and I think I was being a little stingy.
