Happy NYE! It wouldn't be a proper rining in of 2025 without a nice bottle of Champagne. This year we chose to open a NV Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Cuvee No. 746 Extra Brut. Jacquesson is an old house but in the 1990s was one of the first houses in Champagne to start to do away with the the NV system and become more vintage and terroir specific. I bought this bottle because some of the reviews intrigued me.
On the nose there is a mix of bread dough, bruised white fruit and a whiff of flowers, citrus and spice. On the palate there is brioche, bruised apple, and a strong vein of slate minerality that starts in the mid-palate and pushes through the finish making the wine finish very clean and dry but without the bitter note that I often find in Champagnes with high minerality. The mousse is very fine and while very active in the glass and at pour is not overwhelming in the mouth. I really like this Champagne. I struggle to like low dosage Champs but this one (2 g/L) has a mix of oxidative and bright scents and flavors and minerality that is striking but very pleasant. I'm not sure I've had a Champagne quite like this before. 94 points
