Every other Thursday I try to do a small wine tasting with my team. Last night we did a mix of Aglianico, Zinfandel, and Scheurebe. I think the 2023 Matthiasson Scheurebe was a stand out for most. This is a white varietal that is a hybridization of Silvaner and Riesling. Super aromatic with light tropical fruit, citrus, and white flowers. The palate showed citrus, tropical fruit, a saline finish and an explosion of white flowers on the end. Very light, low alcohol and too easy to drink.
The two Aglianicos we tasted split the group. The 2012 Azienda Agricola Marino Cilento Proclamo was my favorite. It had a nose of cherry, leather, a light funk that blew off, and earthy notes. The palate was juicy red fruit and leather and fresh tobacco. Surprisingly, it was very easy to drink and very smooth. However, while two of us had this experience, two others in the group found the wine extremely tannic and drying. We also tried a 2016 Lunarossa Borgomastro Colli di Salerno IGT which was another 100% Aglianico and while it's flavor profile was similar but with the addition of scorched earth the finish was much more tannic and biting to me but again others found it more juicy and easy to drink! These type of experiences highlight why only you can be the expert of what wines you like because no one knows what wine tastes like to you except YOU! Just so neat.
We finished off with a 2019 Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Sonoma County and a 2021 Caymus-Suisun The Walking Fool Zinfandel blend. Both of these were great juicy, red-fruited Zins that were smooth and supremely drinkable and great QPR. Both would make killer wines with a pizza. Both are common bottles so you could easily find them around town. I got the Caymus-Suisun from Costco.
